Today was
our second day of Human Geography with Mr. Schick. We read an interesting
document today which had a great message about hard work. It started off with a
story about a president hiring a man by the name of Rowand to deliver a message
to General Garcia. Rowand takes the message to Garcia without asking any
questions. The author is portraying Rowand as a role model. He goes on to use
an example of an employer telling his employee to find him an encyclopedia. The
author says that a good employer would not ask questions about where to find
the book, what the book is called etcetera. A bad employee would ask questions,
go find help and come back with no encyclopedia.
“If men
will not act for themselves, what will they do when the benefit of effort is
for all?” This quote in my opinion summarizes what the first have of this
document was teaching us.
The second
half of this documentary focused on hard work and how it is not respected the
way it should be. The author mentions that he gives sympathy and praise to
those work diligently even without a reward. Even though the author appreciates
hard workers, homeless, poor, and lazy people get the care and sympathy. Today people can get out of work by threats,
bribes, or assistance.
Carrying a
message to Garcia is a metaphor for doing what you are told with all your effort
and without asking questions. I believe everyone should carry their messages to
Garcia.
